Morreu novo, aos 34 anos, esquecido e na miséria, vítima de tuberculose na cidade mineira de Santos Dumont, em 28 de março de 1939 (ontem, portanto, foi o 77º aniversário da morte do ex-jogador).
Maranhense de Codó, onde nasceu em 28 de janeiro de 1905, jogou no Bangu, Vasco – campeão carioca em 1929 e 1934, Barcelona (Espanha), Young Fellows (Suíça), Nacional (Uruguai) e Flamengo, onde encerrou a carreira, em 1938, já declinando fisicamente e jogando como zagueiro central.
Com seu elegante estilo de matadas no peito, exímio controle de bola e passes longos, esse mulato alto e forte foi o primeiro de uma escola brasileira de jogadores clássicos de meio campo. Jamais brincava em serviço, sendo vigoroso na liderança dos companheiros. Foi considerado o melhor jogador de sua posição nas décadas de 20 e 30.
Disputando a Copa do Mundo no Uruguai, em 1930, foi chamado de “Maravilha Negra” em razão de sua atuação no mundial.
Jogando no Barcelona, sofreu atos discriminatórios por ser negro. Foi o primeiro brasileiro – ao lado do goleiro Jaguaré – a defender o Barcelona, entre os anos 1931 e 1932. Foi contratado junto ao Vasco durante uma excursão do time à Espanha. Jogou 30 partidas e marcou 3 gols, todas amistosas, já que naquela época jogadores estrangeiros não podiam disputar partidas oficiais.
