Weight Loss Medications: Insights Into How Wegovy and Mounjaro Function
How do weight loss drugs like Mounjaro and Wegovy work?
Weight loss drugs such as Mounjaro (Semaglutide)
and Wegovy (Liraglutide) function by influencing your body’s
hunger and glucose-regulating mechanisms. Both are synthetic analogues
of hormones that help regulate blood sugar and appetite, specifically GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1).
These drugs work by mimicking the effects of hormones that signal to the brain when the stomach is
full, thereby reducing appetite and promoting a feeling of fullness.
Mounjaro targets areas in the brain involved in controlling hunger and reward pathways,
helping you feel less hungry and more satisfied after meals.
Wegovy also acts on these pathways but is more potent,
leading to greater weight loss over time. Both drugs can help control
blood sugar levels, making them beneficial for
people with obesity-related diabetes.
How much weight do people lose?
Avg weight loss with Mounjaro and Wegovy can range from 5% to over 20% of their body
weight. Factors like diet, exercise, and adherence to the treatment plan significantly
affect individual results. Clinical trials show that those who follow a low-calorie diet and regular exercise alongside these drugs often achieve
more substantial losses.
Who can get weight-loss drugs on the NHS?
In the UK, weight loss medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro
are available only in specific circumstances. Currently,
they are typically prescribed for individuals with obesity-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure.
Eligibility is determined by a GP based on BMI (body mass index), usually requiring patients
to have a BMI of 28 or higher, though thresholds may vary depending
on individual health needs and medical advice.
Are Wegovy and Mounjaro available privately and what do they cost?
Both drugs are also accessible through private clinics.
Prices for a course of treatment typically range between £400 to £1,000 per month, depending on the brand and provider.
Payment options often include cash or insurance coverage.
Some clinics may offer discounts or financing plans to make treatment more affordable.
What are the side-effects of weight-loss injections?
Common side effects of Mounjaro and Wegovy can include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and stomach discomfort.
More serious but rare issues might involve pancreatitis,
gallstones, or inflammation at the injection site.
It’s crucial to report any significant symptoms and consult a healthcare professional for guidance.
What happens when you stop taking weight-loss drugs?
Stopping these drugs may lead to gradual weight regain due to the body adjusting
to lower levels of the medication. To maintain your progress, it’s advised to continue with a balanced diet and regular physical activity.
Some individuals opt for a gradual tapering off period under medical supervision to minimize weight loss reversal.
What is obesity and what is a healthy BMI?
Obesity is defined as having a significantly higher body fat percentage than needed for health,
increasing the risk of conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
A healthy BMI is typically considered to be between 18.5 and 24.9.
Maintaining a BMI in this range can reduce the risk of chronic diseases
associated with obesity.
